Critical Care Division

The Critical Care Division offers comprehensive and cutting-edge care to our acute patient population by our Magnet™ recognized team. State-of-the-art technology allows us to provide patients who require intensive observation with the highest quality of professional care.

Emergency Services
The number of visits to the Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center surpassed 90,000, exceeding all other hospitals in Suffolk County. The Emergency Department (ED) at Good Samaritan is designed, staffed and equipped to evaluate and treat all types of adult and pediatric emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It includes the only designated Pediatric Emergency room in Suffolk County. It has a Fast Track for rapid treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, is an Area Trauma Center (Level II) for treating life and limb threatening injuries and participates in concert with our cardiology department in a program that allows for rapid diagnosis and treatment of myocardial infarctions (heart attacks).

Trauma Services
In 1995, Good Samaritan was designated as an Area Trauma Center (Level II) by the State of New York. Approximately 8,000 trauma patients are screened by the Emergency Department annually. Approximately 365 adults and children are severely injured and require the services of the multidisciplinary Trauma Center Team.

Cardiology Services
What began as a clinical trail, percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) are now performed under certain criteria genertated by the New York State Department of Health. This approval allows us to perform PCIs during the most serious and life threatening types of heart attacks. A primary PCI is a procedure that opens blocked heart vessels to stop damage in patients having heart attacks. Since 2001, Good Samaritan has safely performed angioplasty on patients having heart attacks. In 2007, the New York State Department of Health granted approval for a few select community hospital performing these types of procedures to begin performing them on an elective basis. Elective PCI will begin in 2008. The Cardiology Department also provides a wide range of other services including but not limited to cardiac catherizations, intraortic balloon insertion, temporary and permanent pacemaker insertion, transesophageal echocardiography and tilt table studies.

Intensive Care Services
Our twenty-five bed Intensive Care unit is equipped to handle complex medical and surgical problems. The nursing staff is experienced in the care of the critically ill patient and a respiratory therapist is assigned to the unit at all times.

Medical Surgical Division

Medical surgical nurses are the front line for Good Samaritan's high quality nursing care. These nurses work within health care teams that include physicians, advanced practice nurses, care managers, social workers, dieticians, pharmacists, physician assistants, occupational and physical therapists and speech pathologists. The teams of professionals ensure that patients receive competent and compassionate care.

In addition to general medical-surgical nursing services, the division is organized into specific subspecialties to best meet the needs of our patients: geriatrics, oncology, an acute palliative care unit, neuro-trauma, and stroke care in our designated stroke center. Within the eight patient care units nurses use a collaborative team approach to patient and family-centered care.

Maternal Child Services

The Maternal Child Division offers a never-ending culture of excellence and optimal patient outcomes. From the Perinatal Education classes to the outstanding pediatric services; the Maternal Child Division “delivers” comprehensive family centered care of the highest standard.

The Perinatal Education Center helps parents to prepare for childbirth as completely as possible, with a unique opportunity for the entire family to become involved in the parent-child bonding process. Some of the programs offered are early pregnancy class, Lamaze, breast feeding, infant massage, and big brother/big sister classes.

More that 3,000 infants are welcomed into the world annually through the services of the Birthplace. The interdisciplinary team is central to our family-centered maternity program. High-risk obstetric patients are admitted to the Ante-partum Unit where they benefit from the care of Maternal Fetal Medicine and our highly trained nursing staff. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was established in 1993. The unit treats more than 500 infants each year. It is a 16-bed state-of-the-art Level 3 facility which provides a broad spectrum of intensive care services for babies born as early as 23 weeks.

The Mother Baby Unit offers new parents with the opportunity to spend as much time with their baby as they desire. Breastfeeding classes are offered three times a week.

Comprehensive services were built around the long-established Pediatric Unit, starting with the addition of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The PICU is the only one of its kind on Suffolk’s south shore. The general Pediatric Unit offers a wide spectrum of services for children and their families. The Center for Pediatric Specialty Care is Good Samaritan’s multispecialty pediatric ambulatory center, which has over 21.000 visits annually. The different areas of expertise include cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, and infant/child development. Comprehensive care for children with complex special needs is also available at the Center. The Center also includes a Cystic Fibrosis Center (A Satellite of the Columbia University’s CF Center).

Perioperative Services

Perioperative Services at Good Samaritan consist of the Ambulatory Surgical Services, Pre-Surgical Testing, Endoscopy and Pain Management, two state-of-the-art surgical areas and two Post Anesthesia Care Units. Combined, these areas provide 18 operating suites, and a 26-bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The Endoscopy Unit offers services to children and adults of all ages. The north Ambulatory Surgery Unit includes a family waiting room with a guest relations representative to guide patients and families with important updates throughout their time in the Ambulatory Unit. The perioperative nurses are an integral and professional member of the interdisciplinary team rendering care to all ages through the continuum of life. Each year thousands of outpatient visits are recorded and approximately 14,875 same day surgical procedures are performed as well as a total of 15,127 surgical procedures.

A collaborative practice model provides the best treatment for each patient through teamwork and clinical competency. The fast paced environment of the Perioperative Division encourages nurses to learn, grow and remain professionally challenged. There are several practice settings available to ensure that Good Samaritan nurses remain diverse and can shape their careers along their professional journey. Perioperative Services uses the application of forward-looking technology and techniques while grounding their collaborative clinical practice in the latest scientific evidence to ensure the delivery of our high quality of nursing care in a supportive and professional atmosphere.

Dialysis Services

Dialysis services offer a comprehensive approach to the end stage renal failure (ESRD) patient. The interdisciplinary team in the hospital-based unit assist each patient in choosing the correct treatment. These may include in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or at- home care. When a decision has been made and dialysis begins, our dedicated and caring nursing staff is there to assist and prepare the patient for dialysis as an outpatient. There is an average of 52,908 dialysis treatments provided each year at our three Dialysis centers.

The hospital-based unit, as well as the outpatient Centers in Bay Shore and Lindenhurst, contains state-of-the-art equipment. Each was designed to create an environment of optimum comfort during treatment, including individual televisions and specially designed reclining chairs. The chronic dialysis centers were developed to provide convenient care to our renal population in a caring and comfortable setting.

In 1980, the only self-care dialysis unit on Long Island and the Metropolitan area was established. This nurse-driven 10-station unit is located in Bay Shore. The self-care unit was developed as an alternative hemodialysis treatment option to allow patients to have increased independence as part of their rehabilitation. A separate area of the dialysis unit was designated to provide the necessary training and treatment by our innovative and clinically competent nursing staff. Patients are given a multitude of options in establishing their treatment regimens from the scheduling of their treatments to collaborating in their plan of care to create an environment of excellence
