Women's Care

Good Samaritan’s commitment to women’s health, surpasses just their obstetrical needs and extends to every phase of their life cycle, from pregnancy and parenthood through menopause and beyond. The hospital continues to be a leader in breast health offering a full spectrum of care for women to take preventative measures against cancer and treatment and support for those who have been diagnosed with the disease.

Breast cancer is the number one cancer diagnosis in women. Breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined account for more than 40 percent of all cancers in women. Early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer and gynecological cancers is emphasized at the hospital. The full range of diagnostic technologies is available to help clinicians diagnose end-stage cancer and help women select the most appropriate treatment.

BirthPlace & Maternal/Fetal Medicine Program

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most joyous events. Good Samaritan is privileged to share in this special time with the more than 3,000 maternity patients who deliver their babies here each year. With necessary human and technological resources to provide expert care to women experiencing high-risk pregnancies, the hospital’s maternity program, BirthPlace, is increasingly becoming the hospital of choice for the region’s maternity patients. Even women whose pregnancies are low-risk are reassured by round-the-clock presence of neonatologists to care for ill or premature newborns on a moment’s notice.
The Maternal/Fetal Medicine Program provides monitoring and supportive care of women whose pregnancies are complicated by premature labor, underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, or due to a multiple birth. High-risk pregnancy specialists work in tandem with neonatologists to ensure the health of both mother and baby.

Perinatal Education

To help parents to prepare for childbirth as completely as possible, Good Samaritan has developed a unique Perinatal Education Center that can help to ease many of the fears and anxieties that parents might have. By learning as much as possible about childbirth, parents can have a much greater sense of security about the birth of their child and know what to expect. Perinatal education offers a unique opportunity for the entire family to become involved in the parent-child bonding process. Knowledge of what is expected to happen is one of the keys to having a positive childbirth experience. Programs offered include pregnancy classes, Lamaze, baby care, maternity tours, new mother support groups, grandparent and sibling classes as well as refresher courses.

Mammography & Breast Diagnostic Center

At Good Samaritan, access to the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances is as important as providing patients with the care and support they need. The Mammography and Breast Diagnostic Center, which is accredited by the American College of Radiology, performs more than 22,000 mammograms annually. Patients requiring surgical biopsy can often be spared from unnecessary lymph node removal through the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy. In cases where needle biopsy can be performed, results are provided within 15 to 20 minutes. Ultrasound, which has the ability to yield detailed information about a suspected abnormality, as well as ultrasound guided needle biopsy, are offered. A registered nurse is available throughout all procedures to answer questions and alleviate anxiety. Support groups and counseling services are offered.
