Good Samaritan Hospital

Volunteer

In biblical times, the Good Samaritan was a volunteer who, unbidden, performed a service for a fellow human being. At the Medical Center, our Guilds carry on that tradition. The Guilds are volunteer organizations from local communities surrounding the hospital. They are active participants in fund raising, advocacy and community service activities for the benefit of the hospital and ultimately for the good of the patients we serve.

From March 2006 to March 2007, the Guilds donated $300,000 to the Pediatric Division of the hospital; and in 2006, 313 volunteers gave more than 56,000 hours of service in various areas. The Guild fundraisers include thriving Gift and Thrift Shops, baby photos, newspapers, vendor sales, Holiday Fair, and Holiday Gift Wrap at the mall.

In addition, the individual seven Guilds have raised money through various means, for example: Military Bridge, WINGO, bus trips to Foxwoods Casino, Stay-At-Home Teas, Summer Bash, Fall Harvest Event and Chinese auctions.

On the second Monday of November, the Guilds honor the deceased members at a Day of Reflection. In April of each year, volunteers are honored at an Awards Luncheon where they are recognized for the hours donated in service to the hospital.

In addition, the Guilds have a Junior Volunteer Program available to those 14 to 18 years of age.

Volunteering through the Guilds of Good Samaritan

Donating Time and Talent

The Guilds of Good Samaritan are a group of men and women who volunteer their time and service for the benefit of Good Samaritan. The volunteers have been working for the Medical Center since 1958, one year before its opening. In addition to donating their own time, they coordinate and organize fundraisers ranging from card parties and garage sales to annual events such as the Holiday Fair, Holiday Gift Wrap at the South Shore Mall and Bake and Plant Sales. These events have raised more than $7,000,000 to benefit the programs and services of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center over the last four decades.

Volunteers work in almost all departments, from the Gift and Thrift shops to the Emergency Department and Same Day Surgery. They also make the rounds of patient areas each morning with newspaper, gifts and arts and crafts carts. Their time, energy, talents and smiles are an invaluable contribution to the overall operation of the Good Samaritan.

Junior Volunteer Program

For the younger generation, a Junior Volunteer Program offers teenagers an opportunity to contribute to the Hospital’s mission. Both boys and girls work in 11 departments, including Admitting, Mother/baby and the Special Care Nursery. Their hours of service are a helpful and positive asset to the volunteer team and to the Good Samaritan staff.
