Early Detection

Tomosynthesis brochure coverGreat strides have been made in spreading the message that an annual mammogram is key in the early detection of and fight against breast cancer.  Within the last decade, many medical breakthroughs have emerged in diagnostic procedures.  Women can rest assured that Good Samaritan, named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, offers advanced tests and procedures.  In fact, Good Samaritan is the only facility in Suffolk County with 3-D digital tomosynthesis to better detect abnormalities in dense breast tissue.

A baseline mammogram is recommended at age 40 and yearly screenings after for women of average risk for breast cancer.  Women at elevated risk should speak with their physician about earlier screenings or using other modalities such as such as ultrasound or breast MRI..  Good Samaritan’s genetic counseling department is available to provide a full risk assessment.  When a mammogram using advanced, digital equipment is performed, a physician has the greatest opportunity to detect breast cancer at an early, curable stage.  The array of diagnostic technologies used at the Women’s Imaging Center helps physicians identify areas of special concern.

Good Samaritan’s commitment to women and their health care needs continues with the opening of its new Women’s Imaging Center, located at 735 Montauk Highway, one block west of the main campus.  Having outgrown the space formerly occupied at both the hospital and 1111 Montauk Highway, outpatient breast imaging services—a component of the comprehensive services provided by the hospital’s Breast Health Center—will now be offered primarily at this state-of-the-art facility.

The Highest Accreditation Scores From the NAPBC

NAPBC_Logo_one_line_-_August_2008Good Samaritan earned a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.  Accreditation is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

Good Samaritan earned the highest scores on all standards and was recognized for offering a comprehensive, patient-focused breast care program.

The Women’s Imaging Center’s radiologists, nurses and board certified registered radiological technologists have special expertise in all aspects of breast imaging to provide the latest in screening and full-field, digital mammography services.  In addition to 3-D digital tomosynthesis, computer-assisted detection, galactography, high-resolution breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided fine needle and core biopsies, and stereotactic core biopsies are all available.

3-D Digital Tomosynthesis: Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center is the first facility in Suffolk County with this advanced diagnostic tool.  This FDA-approved method detects abnormalities in dense breast tissue.

Diagnostic Mammography: Comprehensive diagnostic procedures for patients with abnormal screening mammogram results or symptoms are offered.  Patients are given their results by their physicians the same day.

Comprehensive Screening Mammogram Program: Routine screening mammograms may be scheduled for asymptomatic individuals to facilitate early detection.

Breast_Ultrasound_Pink_copyDiagnostic Ultrasound: Sonograms are being performed using the center’s new, fully digital ultrasound machines with 4-D imaging.  This technology features a flat-screen display, voice recognition, intelligent automation and more, allowing staff to better assist patients in understanding their condition.  It also produces clearer and more detailed images to identify suspicious breast lesions sooner and eliminate the need for more expensive and invasive tests.  The high-tech system guides catheters and needles without radiation exposure and reduces the time required for many exams.

Stereotactic Biopsy: The center is equipped with a stereotactic table with the most advanced vacuum-assisted biopsy technology.  A technologist and nurse assist the doctor, who is able to biopsy mic

rocalcifications (just millimeters in size) and lumps that are not obvious and may go undetected by ultrasound.  This nonsurgical, image-guided biopsy requires only local anesthesia in the breast and is less invasive than open-surgical biopsies, leaving little or no internal scar tissue.  Most women get benign results and do not have to proceed with surgery.  For women who need surgery, the comprehensive information provided by the procedure often allows for surgery in just one operation.

Needle Localizations: A lump that cannot be felt needs to be localized prior to a biopsy for surgical removal.  In such cases, a guide is used, along with either a mammogram or ultrasound, to locate the area for biopsy.  The removed mass or calcifications are X-rayed immediately to confirm the procedure while the patient is in the operating room.

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Breast MRI continues to be performed for newly diagnosed and high-risk breast cancer patients at Good Samaritan’s main campus if indicated by the physician.

Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) Bone Densitometry: The “gold standard” of bone assessment methods, this noninvasive test is a baseline assessment for osteoporosis and can be completed in a matter of minutes.  Test results provide important information to assess the next steps in care to help prevent future bone loss and minimize the risk of a devastating injury.  When an appointment is made for a mammogram, a DEXA test can be scheduled as well.

Genetic Counseling: Screening for hereditary cancer risk performed by board certified genetic counselors with expertise in cancer risk assessment is available at both the Women's Imaging Center and the main hospital campus.

Patient Navigation Services

Good Samaritan provides personalized support by staff certified in cancer care and patient navigation. Patients with suspicious findings will be referred to the navigator to ensure expedited diagnosis, treatment and quality care. Navigators educate and guide patients and their families throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery, while always keeping them

connected to their interdisciplinary cancer care team. This program was specifically designed to help patients overcome barriers to cancer care and navigate the health care system in an efficient and effective way. When faced with a diagnosis of cancer, patients are not alone. Good Samaritan is with them every step of the way.
