Emergency Services

Emergency Services at Good Samaritan is designed, staffed and equipped to evaluate and treat all types of adult and pediatric emergencies 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. In 2009, Good Samaritan evaluated more than 100,000 patients. The department contains an Area Trauma Center (Level II), for treating life and limb threatening injuries, a designated Stroke Center, a SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) program, a CPORT (Cardiovascular Patient Outcomes Team) center that performs emergency primary angioplasty, a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department and a Fast Track for rapid treatment of minor illnesses and injuries.

Your Visit Starts With…

Triage

Upon entering the ED, you will be assessed and asked questions about your present illness and past medical history. You are then assigned to one of the specialized areas in the Department for further evaluation and treatment. Patients are cared for on a priority basis.

You may be asked to be seated in the waiting room, before you are brought to a treatment area. If your condition changes or you are feeling worse while waiting, please notify the triage nurse immediately.

Evaluation and Treatment

Once you are in one of the specialized treatment areas, a physician, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner will continue your evaluation and begin treatment. If your condition requires further evaluation or treatment, additional consults will be obtained. A private physician of on-call physician may be notified.

To make your visit easier, please bring with you:

  1. Name of your primary care provider and specialists
  2. Summary of your prior history
  3. List of your allergies
  4. Current medications

Adult Treatment Area

The adult treatment area is the focus of adult emergency care. Most adult patients with serious illnesses, injuries or those being admitted to the Hospital are treated in this area. State-of-the-art equipment aids the professional staff in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of medical and surgical emergencies. Specialized rooms and treatment areas provide the setting for the treatment of ear, nose, throat and vision-related emergencies as well as plastic surgical procedures. Other specialized rooms and treatment areas provide for comprehensive emergency care for adult patients.

Pediatric Treatment Area

The Pediatric Emergency Department is comprised of twelve areas and an asthma treatment unit. Around the clock staffing is provided by board certified pediatricians. As the only Pediatric Emergency Department in Suffolk County, the entire area is designed and constructed to provide comprehensive levels of pediatric emergency care supported by the Medical Center’s inpatient Pediatric Unit and Intensive Care Unit.

The pediatric areas are created with the needs and well being of the child in mind. The separate Pediatric Waiting Room is decorated in a child-friendly motif with the patient’s and their families comfort a top priority.

Fast Track Treatment Area

Both adult and pediatric patients with minor illnesses and injuries are treated in the Fast Track Treatment Area. Fast Track minimizes waiting time and assures appropriate referral for necessary aftercare.

Trauma Treatment Area

Good Samaritan is designated an Area Trauma Center by New York State. The trauma team, which includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and technicians, is available immediately to handle the most serious pediatric or adult trauma cases.

The Trauma Suite contains specialty items for intensive trauma care and is designed to allow the physician or surgeon complete access to the patient. Advanced equipment designed to obtain the most beneficial outcome for the patient are integral to the Suite’s design. The close proximity to the Ambulance Bay and direct access to the Diagnostic Imaging Suite enhances the timeliness and quality of trauma care.

Diagnostic Imaging

The Center contains one of the most advanced emergency diagnostic radiographical centers on Long Island and is supported by in-house attending radiologists. State-of-the-art LightSpeed CT technology and MRI capability are available within the Center to immediately aid in the diagnosis and treatment of severe trauma or stroke. A dedicated sonography area affords comfort, privacy and expeditious patient care.

The imaging area is supported by a computerized radiography system, which obtains digital images, capable of far greater resolution and clinical review than traditional X-ray film imaging processes. Moreover, since these images are computerized, they may be transmitted electronically for immediate specialty review and consultation.
